Manchester United welcomed Liverpool to Old Trafford following back to back loses to Brighton and Brentford. Erik Ten Hag and his men knew something had to change to get a much needed win over old rivals Liverpool tonight. A thumping away to Brentford last weekend had piled more misery on the Dutch manager, the confidence of a one-time bright Man United team had vanished quickly. Fans awaited the crucial home time and carried on with anti-Glazer protests before the game.
The Red Devils began the game on the front foot and soon got their reward for their relentless work on and off the ball. English winger Jason Sancho grabbed the first goal of the night and his first of the new season.
Jurgen Klopp‘s side struggled to break down a compact United defence and the first half ended 1-0 in the favour of the home team. Liverpool began the second half in frantic style and looked like they would cause United problems only to get caught out on the break again by United later on. Second half substitute Antony Martial teed up Marcus Rashford to get United’s second goal in the game.
A defensive approach was soon the order of the day for Ten Hag’s side who lacked composure to deal with a Liverpool corner that was eventually scrapped in by a Mo Salah header. Man United held on to a slender one-goal margin to get their first win of the season and Erik Ten Hag’s first in his Premier League reign.
